BREAST ENHANCEMENT PROCEDURES
Breast enhancement procedures are some ofthe most common plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures. Improving awoman’s bust line has been known to enhance a woman’s overall appearance andboost self confidence with regards to their figure.
BREAST AUGMENTATION (Augmentation Mammoplasty ormammaplasty) – a surgical procedure done to uplift the sizeof a woman’s breast, usually done for cosmetic purposes. To enlarge a breast, a saline-filled or silicone gel prosthesis is inserted in a pocket formed beneath the breast on the chest wall. The incision for the insertion of the breast implant may be made either in the fold line under the breast, around the nipple area, or under the arm. The procedure may be an out patient procedure in an ambulatory surgical center, but under general anaesthesia. The patient will need a soft surgical supportive brassiere after the surgery. After the discharge, the patient may need continuous care for the next 12 - 24 hours depending on the patient’s recovery rate. The patient may be up and about after 3 – 4 days and may resume normal non-strenuous activities within the week. The breast may experience soreness for several days and appear swollen for several weeks after the surgery, but over time, the post surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.
BREAST REDUCTION (Reduction mammoplasty) - a surgical procedure to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate discomfort associated with overly large breasts. The procedure may be an outpatient procedure in an ambulatory surgical center under general anesthesia. Usually, three incisions are made to remove the excess fat and tissue. The areola and nipples are then repositioned. Many times, the size of the areola is also reduced. A thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain out excess blood during the healing process.Recovery time would depend on the patient. Usually, regular normal activities may be resumed within two to three weeks. Lifting heavy weights and other extraneous activities must be avoided. The patient may experience a loss of sensation, which for some could take a year to return to normal.
BREAST LIFT SURGERY (Mastoplexy) – a surgical procedure to raise and firm up sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissues to support a new breast contour. This is sometimes done in conjunction with a breast augmentation procedure. The procedure may be an outpatient procedure in an ambulatory surgical center under general anaesthesia and may take two to three hours. Recovery time would depend on the patient. Usually, regular normal activities may be resumed within a couple of weeks.
